A toilet roll company wants to encourage recycling – so they say if you keep the cardboard tubes they will exchange 8 of them for 1 new toilet roll.

I have saved up 71 carboard tubes – what is the maximum number of toilet rolls that I can get without buying any more?

(The answer isn’t 8)

  1. 9

  2. I think the answer is 9 because 64 divided by 8 is 8 and you need 8 to get 1 more so you will have a total of 9.

  3. 10

The first time you have to take away 8 from saved cardboard tubes so 71-8=63 then you have 1 extra whole toilet roll. Then you only have to take 7 away each time because you have the extra toilet roll from earlier. 63/7=9 and you have the one from the beginning so you have 10
